Northern UK Trip Part 1: English Lake District

The Lake District, just a few hours' drive north, never made our travel list for whatever reason.  This summer we were more or less on lockdown with our impending visa renewal keeping our passports on house arrest.  We took advantage of our domestic status and finally made a trip up to the glorious Lake District, a place we have heard so much about from both friends and top UK travel lists.  Now that we have been, I am a little ashamed it took us this long to go.  Wow!  Almost at a loss for words to describe this place.  Simply gorgeous is truly just the beginning of a whole host of praiseworthy descriptions.  Truly one of the jewels of the UK, the Lake District is not only stunning but has a way of truly taking you away from the cares of life, transporting you to bygone poetic era.  In short, we simply loved the Lake District!

A stop in the nice city of Preston en route to the Lakes.  A lovely city with a charming centre and interesting church history sights.

Our first full day up in the Lake District we hiked the gorgeous Catbells trail.  It was an incredible introduction to the beautiful scenery of this region.  Just wow . . .

Castlerigg Stone Circle in the northern Lake District was really beautiful . . .

Easily the highlight of the Lake District for us was this drive through the Newlands Valley.  Stunning just doesn't even begin to describe.  One jaw-dropping vista after another . . .

Probably my favourite capture in the Lake District, when I came across this view descending down the Newlands Valley I was truly overcome with awe.  Unbelievable beauty beyond adequate description.

We enjoyed lots of family fun down time in our rental house in Ambleside.

A visit to William Wordsworth's Dove Cottage was so interesting.  What a humble, if not dreary, abode.  Yet set among so much beauty in the heart of the Lake District it is not difficult to see how poetic inspiration would arise.

Grasmere

Tarn Hows . . . so many small lakes and waterways to explore up here.

A visit to Beatrix Potter's house at Hilltop Farm.  So fun to see the town filled with so many recognisable Potter story settings.

Wary Castle

A day on Lake Windermere . . .

Hiking around Ullswater . . .

The famous Grasmere Gingerbread shop . . . and Wordsworth's grave
