The last of our Malta wanderings took us to the second island, Gozo. At 14 km, it's much larger than Comino, but also smaller than the main island of Malta. It's big enough to warrant a road system of sorts, although a very limited and rather confusing one, so we took our car over on the ferry to spend the day exploring this small island.
Malta is comprised of three tiny islands. The largest is the main island of Malta, you can drive from top to bottom in roughly an hour. The smallest is the island of Comnino, which is only 2.5 km wide by 1.5 km (1.5 by .9 miles). You could literally walk the entire island, and we did just that. We took the passenger ferry (there really aren't proper roads on Comino) over to spend the day snorkelling and hiking. Comino is most known for its Blue Lagoon, a gorgeous bay full of turquoise water and fish! There is only one tiny sand beach, literally fits like 10 people!

We arrived already attired for water and hit the snorkelling as soon as we could. It was incredible to watch Trevon jump right in and snorkel without any instruction or assistance. Without fins or a life vest, the kid was out there for days in snorkel heaven. Scott and I were giving each other high fives at this point, finally arriving at the stage in life where all of our kids are independent in the water. I can't tell you how much fun it was to watch all three of my kids snorkelling together. Brought such a huge smile on my face. They all just loved it!

After a while of snorkelling we broke for lunch, Trina and her family headed back to the main island to check out some fishing villages, and then the five of us headed out for a hike, everyone in their swimwear! And what's more fun than taking a family wee in the wilderness together :) We hiked around the cliffs hovering over the green blue waters to reach the Santa Maria Tower, built in the 1600's as a part of the ancient Maltese Islands defensive chain. It is also featured in the film adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo as Château d'If.
We spent the remainder of the afternoon snorkelling, staying until the last passenger ferry departed. It was such a magical day with my family on this remote island (only 4 people live here).
