Locked Down in the Lake District

We've been lucky enough to enjoy pretty good weather during most of the lockdown allowing us to get out and stretch our legs a bit.  But evenso, we were still in the middle of a big city in the middle of the biggest pandemic in over 100 years, and we were getting a bit of cabin fever.  Travel restrictions were making an impossibility out of getting away.  So we were stuck for a while.  When the UK announced the roadmap to normalcy in unlocking down earlier in the summer, I read the entire 50-page government document to get a handle on the new rules ahead.  When I learned that hospitality would open, making holiday rentals legal in England from July 4th, I quickly organised a trip to get away to the countryside.  I booked us a nice house in the western Lake District for two weeks from July 5th.  The weather was never that great, but we had a wonderful two weeks of hiking, puzzles, reading, BBQs in the rain, hot tubbing, and bing watching survivor over bowlfuls of local ice-cream.  We soaked up all that fresh air and wonderful peace and quiet.  More often than not the only thing I could hear out the windows was the sheep in the neighbouring fields.  We really miss the taste of the water and the smell of the fresh air, even with the hints of sheep dung.  It was pretty easy to social distance up there.  Far fewer people than normal made the hiking trails fairly empty.  We picnicked on the trails for lunch or BBQed at home each night for dinner, never eating out.
