Though we go home to visit family in the states quite often, we seldom go over Christmas. It's such a stressful and chaotic type of travel and we find we get more out of our family visits when it's not around Christmas. This year it just really felt like it was time to be home with our families for Christmas, and also give our kids a chance to experience Christmas at home. With Aunt Bev's passing since this trip, it turned out to be a more important trip than I could ever have realised (though I really did feel prompted in this way). We were able to see both sides of our families and also enjoy some other experiences during our three weeks together in the US. We spent the first week in Georgia visiting Scott's parents and then a delightful couple of days in gorgeous little Savannah, which has totally stolen my heart.

Christmas 2019: Part 1 of 4 Georgia
Arriving in Macon after a transatlantic flight and then long drive from Atlanta, first stop dinner with the grandparents at Cracker Barrel. We need showers and sleep!
I ordered a cake ahead of time and we were able to celebrate Dallin's birthday with him on his birthday, which was so great! So lucky that so far we haven't been apart on his birthday.
Funny sister card
Hanging out at the grandparents' house
Mini-golf
Roller skating! Oh man haven't roller skated since like 6th grade, and it just all came flooding back. Not as nimble now, but I still got it!
Finally trying this southern institution, waffles at the Waffle House (honestly not that great, but fun to try!)
Living out all their red neck dreams
After a few fun days with the grandparents in Macon we went to Savannah for a couple of days. I am truly speechless over the beauty of this place. It oozes charm from every well-planned square. The Spanish Moss is draped like tinsel across all of the trees and with the low, winter light the town turns into a luminescent playground. What a stunningly gorgeous place!
First of many amazing meals in Savannah was at the unforgettable Mrs. Wilkes. Southern cooking at its very best. No frills, cash-only home cooking. We are still talking about this meal.
The piece de resistance, the grand fountain at Forsyth Park. I mean it just spectacular and almost deserves its own post. It was really showing off in the afternoon light.
Our wonderful, historic hotel
The Mercer-Williams House, if these walls could talk they'd tell you stories of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
It was our 22nd anniversary on our second day here. We went on a lovely walking tour and then had a wonderful anniversary family dinner at the famed Olde Pink House. It did not disappoint!
We drove out of the centre of town to visit this tree-lined road at Wormsloe Historic Sight. Definitely worth the detour and price of admission to see this gorgeous lane.
We explored the Bonaventure Cemetery, which is equal parts gorgeous and creepy. Hauntingly beautiful place. I could have spent all day here.
Along the riverfront in Savannah. Savannah is a major port.
Finale dinner at the wonderful Elizabeth's on 37th
