I have a good idea of what it might feel like to be royalty. Upon arrival in the village of Chiti, Nepal, where we would be living and serving for the next week, we received a king's welcome. From the moment we stepped off the coach we were received by hundreds of smiling villagers lining the road, greeting us with piles of flower leis, smearing our foreheads with red tikkas and playing celebratory music. We were on parade, literally. They walked us into the centre of the village with music and much fanfare. We were then seated as honoured guests as if we were at a special assembly. It was an amazing spectacle, and also very humbling. Truly one of the most amazing and surreal experiences of my life.
This woman, Veronica, our team lead on the expedition, such an amazing person! Friend for life!
After the welcome ceremony we settled into the village. We put our gear on the floor of the schoolhouse where we would be sleeping for the week and then joined the villagers in the school courtyard. I brought my camera out to capture these initial moments of interaction and some of the village kids were very keen to get in front of the lens! I was proud of the kids for the way they put themselves out there, got involved and played with their new friends. It was a great introduction to our week in Chiti!
