Warsaw, Poland

Living in London has this way of bringing people together. London is an attractive and often very functional destination (we have a big airport in a handy global location connecting what seems like the entire world, we have lots of big businesses that seem to play host to every single business person in the world at one time or another and a host of other things people seem to really need!), so this often means people you know from all phases of life come through at one point or another. I'm actually more likely to see some people here than in my hometown. It's one of the things I love about living here. And sometimes new connections are made with these cross-continent gatherings, as was the case with my friend RonNell. She's a law professor in the US who comes over to London each summer to teach law classes. It's a pretty sweet gig that gives her and her family the opportunity to experience a slice of life in London and explore a bit of Europe each summer. So when our mutual friend passing through London one summer introduced us, I liked her instantly. Smart, funny, thoughtful and just all around likeable. And that is how we became friends. We make plans to get together while she's here in London each year, and this year we decided to do something a bit more exciting than meet up for tea. With her equally charming daughter, we set off planning a mother-daughter weekend excursion to someplace in Europe we hadn't yet explored. Finding a destination that met this singular requirement was a bit tricky. We had to flip to the C list. Though we had been to Poland before, Warsaw had yet escaped us, and it also seemed to slot in nicely with RonNell's onwards travels. So a mother-daughter weekend in Warsaw was born. And it was fantastic! Great weekend of wandering, long al fresco meals, giggles over silly discoveries, lots of ice-cream and great conversation all amidst the warm backdrop of this surprisingly charming Polish capital. It was just delightful!
