Dubai Part 1: Big Buildings & Big Beaches

Dubai, oh my! Where oh where to begin with this place? Such a place of contrasts. Such a place of extremes. Such a place of excess. Oh, and such a place of sun. Yes, sun! Desperate for sun (you won't understand this unless you've lived in the UK this last year), Dubai was first and foremost a sun therapy mission. And boy did it hit the mark. 32 degrees and pure sunshine the whole week through. It was a dream to wake up to warmth and sun, reliable warmth and sun every single day! It all now seems like a very distant memory, as a month later (and nearing May I might add) we are still dealing with winter-like temperatures! For the love! Okay I digress.

Surrounded by a jungle of skyscrapers (including the one we were staying in) taking a dip in the pool we could hear the constant roar of Ferraris racing up the roads below, often in contest with the Muslim call to prayer echoing off every building side. This sparkling city in the middle of the Arab world hosts the most diverse international population, with expats comprising a whopping 80% of its inhabitants. Such a place of wealth and excess, it seems to birth a new skyscraper every week. The malls! I have never seen so many massive malls in one place. There is such dichotomy here with all the wealth and such a transient international population in the context of such a conservative Muslim nation. Walking along the beach you see fully abayaed women going for a swim next to string bikinis.

My first glimpse of Dubai from a taxi to our rental apartment.

Ascending the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa, at the top!

Dizzying views over Dubai from the Burj Khalifa!

Back inside Dubai mall, then lunch at Scott's favourite sandwich joint from our D. C. days.  Crazy to find so many American food chains here in Dubai, and all of it tasted just the same!

Around the fountains of Dubai mall at the base of the Burj Khalifa, just as dizzying looking up.

Dubai Fountains

For a taste of more traditional UAE life, we visited the Dubai Museum in old Dubai.

Dubai souks

Dubai Creek

Back at our rental apartment for a swim!

The beach directly in front of our rental, the water so blue and so warm!

We stayed in one of those big buildings back there.

Arab bagpipers

The famous 7-star hotel, Burj al Arab at our favourite beach, Umm Sequim
